what is the Uramaki ?

Uramaki is a type of sushi roll that originated in Japan. The term "uramaki" translates to "inside-out roll" in English, which refers to the way it is prepared. Unlike traditional sushi rolls, where the seaweed (nori) is on the outside, uramaki rolls have the rice on the outside, and the nori is placed on the inside.

The preparation of uramaki involves spreading a layer of sushi rice on a bamboo sushi mat, then placing a sheet of nori on top of the rice. Various ingredients such as raw or cooked fish, seafood, vegetables, and even fruits are added in a line along the edge of the nori. The roll is then carefully rolled up using the bamboo mat, resulting in the rice being on the outside and the nori and filling on the inside. Finally, the roll is sliced into bite-sized pieces.

Uramaki is often served with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi. Popular types of uramaki include the California roll (with avocado, cucumber, and crab or imitation crab), the spicy tuna roll (with tuna and spicy mayonnaise), and the rainbow roll (with a variety of fish and avocado on the inside, and thinly sliced fish on top).

Uramaki ingredients:

  • Sushi rice (2 cups)
  • Nori sheets (seaweed)

  • Soy sauce
  • Pickled ginger
  • Wasabi

Uramaki instructions:

  1. Cook the sushi rice according to the package instructions. Once cooked, let it cool to room temperature.

  2. Prepare your fillings by slicing the fish or other ingredients into thin strips. You can get creative with your fillings based on your preferences.

  3. Place a sheet of plastic wrap on a bamboo sushi mat to prevent sticking. Place a sheet of nori on top of the plastic wrap, shiny side down.

  4. Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking and grab a handful of sushi rice. Spread the rice evenly over the nori sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top.

  5. Flip the nori sheet and rice over so that the rice is facing down on the bamboo mat.

  6. Arrange your desired fillings in a line along the edge of the nori closest to you.

  7. Using the bamboo mat, start rolling the sushi tightly away from you, applying gentle pressure to secure the filling. Make sure to press firmly to seal the roll.

  8. Once the roll is complete, use a sharp knife to slice it into bite-sized pieces. Dip the knife in water between cuts to prevent sticking.

  9. Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients to make more rolls.

  10. Serve the uramaki rolls with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
